Colby, Bates tie 2-2 in women's soccer
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Becky Macdonald (Danvers, Mass.) scored on a long
shot with 58 seconds left in regulation to help Bates College to a 2-2
overtime tie with Colby College in New England Small College Athletic
Conference women's soccer Saturday.
Colby and Bates are both in the NESCAC playoffs. The Mules earned the
seventh seed and will play a quarterfinal game at Amherst College on Sunday
at noon. Meanwhile, Bates is seeded fifth and will play at fourth-seeded
Williams at noon.
Colby (7-2-4, 3-2-4 NESCAC) had two leads in the game. Kara McCabe
(Watertown, Conn.) scored off an assist from her sister, Katie McCabe
(Watertown, Conn.), just 10:56 into the opening half as the Mules led 1-0
at intermission.
Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass.) tallied unassisted at 7:34 of the second half
to tie the game at 1-1.
The Mules went ahead again about seven minutes later when Libba Cox
(Guilford, Conn.) scored off an assist from Laura Williamson (Manchester,
Conn.).
Macdonald's goal came off an assist from Kim Alexander (Cumberland, Maine).
Liza Benson (Orchid, Fla.) stopped 12 shots for Colby, while Nini Spalding
(San Francisco, Calif.) made eight saves for Bates (10-3-1, 5-3-1).
