Colby women's soccer advances to NESCAC semifinals
AMHERST, Mass. --- The Colby College women's soccer team is headed to the New England Small College Athletic Conference semifinals after advancing in a penalty kick shootout over Amherst College after the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie on Sunday in a quarterfinal game.
Colby (7-2-5), the seventh seed, and second-seeded Amherst played 220 minutes this year without scoring a goal. The two teams also played to a 0-0 overtime draw at Colby on October 15.
Liza Benson came up with two big penalty kick saves in the shootout after Amherst had gone up 3-2. The Mules got penalty kick goals from Meggie Herlihy, Libba Cox, Mollie Puskar and Katie McCabe. The decisive penalty kick came off the foot of McCabe.
Benson finished the game with four saves for her seventh shutout of the season.
Colby will play at top-seeded Tufts University in a semifinal game this Saturday at 11 a.m. Third-seeded Bowdoin and fifth seed Bates will play in the other game at 1:30 p.m.
