Williamson, McCabe, Benson named All-New England

WATERVILLE, Maine ---- Colby College junior forward Laura Williamson (Kingswood-Oxford/Manchester, Conn.), senior defender Kara McCabe (Taft School/Watertown, Conn.) and junior goalkeeper Liza Benson (Lawrence Academy/Orchid, Fla.) each earned All-New England second team honors on Monday.

The three women had all been named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) all-conference team back in November. Williamson and Benson were on the NESCAC first team and McCabe was on the second team.

Williamson, a three-time NESCAC all-conference selection, was named NESCAC Rookie of the Year after her first year. Williamson led the NESCAC this past season in points per game (1.67) and was tied for the conference lead in goals per game (0.67) with her 10 goals and five assists for 25 points.

Williamson heads into her final year ranked second all-time in scoring at Colby with 34 goals and 13 assists for 81 career points. She trails Christine O'Donnell '03 in total points (95) and career goals (43).

Benson took over as starting goalkeeper in her junior season and was second in the NESCAC in saves per game (6.33) and was third in goals against average (0.87) and save percentage (.872). Benson posted seven shutouts in 15 starts. She made two big penalty kick stops in a shootout to help Colby advance past Amherst College into the NESCAC semifinals.

Benson has posted a 15-6-5 record in her three seasons at Colby. She has allowed 25 goals in 29 career games played and has nine shutouts.

Kara McCabe, a co-captain this year, had three goals and one assist for seven points this season. She helped lead a defense that allowed just 14 goals in 15 games. McCabe and the defense helped secure seven shutouts and had just one game where the opponent scored three goals. McCabe finished her career with seven goals and seven assists for 21 points.

The Mules finished the season 7-3-5 and made the NESCAC semifinals before losing a 2-1 decision to Tufts University.
