Colby volleyball wins two matches; Gordon captures tourney

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Gordon College was the only team to go 3-0 in winning the Colby College Volleyball Invitational on Saturday with wins over University of Maine at Machias and University of Southern Maine.

Gordon (4-3) won the inaugural Colby Invitational in 2002. Colby, which fell to the Fighting Scots in a match Friday night, had won the last three titles.

Colby, Rhode Island College, University of Maine at Farmington and University of Maine at Presque Isle all had 2-1 records in the tourney.

Colby (2-1) bounced back after the loss to Gordon on Friday night with wins against Rhode Island College (23-30, 30-18, 30-25, 30-19) and Maine-Farmington (30-16, 30-17, 30-11).

Jessie Prentice had 16 kills, while Meredith Lawler finished with 14 kills for Colby in the win over RIC. Jenny Lawrence, who made the all-tournament team for the Mules, added 34 assists and 11 digs. Kendall Kirby had 18 digs and Carlie Minichino added four aces and eight digs.

Lawler had 13 kills and three aces for the Mules against Maine-Farmington. Prentice had 10 kills and five aces, Lawrence added 29 assists and eight digs, and Kirby had 18 digs and four aces. Julie Hike and Cassie Sancartier both had six kills.
