Colby Drops Tough Short Contest To Hamilton
Colby vs Hamilton College
March 25, 2002
Fort Myers, FL
The Colby College White Mules (1-2) were the victims of quiet bats and sloppy play and then Mother Nature took care of the rest as they fell to the Hamilton College Continentals 5-2 in a 5 inning game that was shortened due to downpours. The Mules were limited to five hits in five innings and left two runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings. The Mules picked up their first run when Matt Simard '02 (Auburn, Maine) continued the Mules offensive power displayed in the first two days of the season when he smashed a triple over the head of center fielder that was hit at the beginning of warning track in front of the 415' sign. Eric Roy '04 (Lisbon Falls, Maine) continued his clutch early season hitting when he drove in Simard with an RBI single. Roy was also a defensive stalwarft behind the plate all day for the Mules, stopping at least a dozen bouncing dirt balls for the Mules. The Mules scoring in the fifth was also ignited with a triple, this one coming from Vincent Domestico '04 (Ashland, Mass.) when he placed a well hit ball in the right field gap, and by the time a Hamilton defender chased the rolling ball down at the wall and relayed the ball in. Domestico was safe at third. Pinch hitter Brandon Royce '04 (Augusta, Maine) drove in Domestico with an RBI single on a blooper over the shortstop's head. The Mules were unable to produce any other runs though, and while Matt Gibson '03 (Cortland, Ohio) had some impressive stuff at times, he had trouble with his control and got himself into jams by issuing nine walks to Hamilton batters in 3 2/3 innings. Gibson also gave up 3 hits and struck out two. Gibson struggled early, walking the bases loaded to open the game before Fehlman drove in two runs with a single. James Garrett '02 (Yarmouth, Maine) looked impressive in relief pitching 1 1/3 innings, giving up 0 hits and 0 runs while striking out two. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth when downpours flooded the infield. The make-up time of the second game of the doubleheader has not yet been determined.
