Long Ball Leads Augsburg Over Colby
Colby vs Augsburg College
March 26, 2002
Fort Myers, FL
The Mules fell victim to the long ball as the University of Augsburg smashed six home runs en route to scoring 17 runs to top Colby 17-10. Matt Simard '02 (Auburn, Maine), who has been the Mules most consistent hitter in the early going, started the scoring in the first inning when he doubled and scored on an Augsburg wild pitch. Brandon Irwin '04 (Alexandria, N.Y.) smashed a double to left-center in the second and scored on a Philip Geiger '04 (Rye Brook, N.Y.) fielder's choice. Although the Mules picked up two runs in the first two inning, Augsburg picked up 12, thus putting Colby in the hole early. Some late offense that brought the Mules closer came on a B.L. Lippert '04 (Augusta, Maine) home-run and an Irwin sacrifice fly in the fifth. In the sixth the Mules picked up three more runs on an Augsburg error, an Eric Roy '04 (Lisbon Falls, Maine) double and a Brandon Royce '04 (Augusta, Maine) single. The Mules added a run in the ninth on a Kevin Brunelle '03 (Augusta, Maine) fielder's choice, but the early damage done by the Augsburg bats proved too much for the Mules to overcome.
