 Game Recap:

Colby Gets Swept By Impressive Concordia Squad
Colby vs Concordia College
March 29, 2002
Fort Myers, FL

1. Baseball- Concordia 5 Colby 4

Fort Myers, Fl.- The Colby College White Mules gave Concordia College all that they could handle putting up 2 runs in the top of the seventh and then loading the bases, but Concordia worked out of the jam to hold on for a 5-4 victory. Brandon Royce '04 (Augusta, Maine) pitched the complete game for the Mules and was effective in his second start of the season. Concordia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when after a base on balls and Colby error Hebrink smashed a three run homer for Concordia. Concordia would add to their lead in the fourth when Barnacle and Eckhoff started the inning with back to back singles and Barnacle put the score at 4-0 on a Siverson sacfrice fly to left field. The Mules got their bats going in the when B.L. Lippert '04 (Augusta, Maine) singled through the left side, followed by the loading of the basepaths after walks to Eric Roy '04 (Lisbon Falls, Maine) and Lucas Cummings '02 (South Paris, Maine). Freshman second baseman Jared Cushman '05 (Augusta, Maine) then proved that he could handle batting in a clutch situation for the Mules, driving a two run single up the middle. The Mules would then enter the top of the seventh inning down 4-2, but they showed a great deal of grit clawing their way back into the game. Jon Lord '02 (Dublin, N.H.) ignited the Colby bench to lead off the inning when he blasted a solo homerun over the left field fence on a 2-1 fastball. Then after a Roy single and Vincent Domestico '04 (Ashland, Mass.) single and Cushman sacrifice bunt the Mules loaded the bases on a Joseph Johnson '03 (Norwood, Mass.) walk. Royce then pinch hit for Colby and appeared to have hit a capable sacrifice fly to center field, but the Concordia center fielder dropped the ball and the score was 4-4 with the bases loaded and one out. Colby missed a golden opportunity to capitalize on the Concordia error, when the next batter grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Concordia picked up the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh, when Solum walked and advanced to second on a Royce balk on a miscommunication with the first baseman. After two Concordia baserunners loaded the bases on a fielder's choice and another base on balls, Johnson worked Royce to a 3-2 count before walking in the winning run.

2. Baseball- Concordia 12 Colby 0

Fort Myers, Fl.- With the momentum of a walk off victory in the first game of the doubleheader Concordia rolled over the Colby College White Mules in the nightcap 12-0. The Mules first two pitchers Philip Geiger '04 (Rye Brook, N.Y.) and Daniel Deacon '03 (Rumford, R.I.) were the victim of the base on balls, as they only gave up a combined five hits in 4 2/3 innings, but were victimized by 8 walks and a hit batsman. James Garrett '02 (Yarmouth, Maine) was effective in shutting down the Concordia offense for the last 2 1/3 innings, limiting Concordia to one earned run with one hit and four strikeouts. The Colby offense was limited to four hits in the game, with the only extra base hit coming on a Jared Cushman '05 (Augusta, Maine) double in the seventh inning. The Mules were not able to get more than one runner on the basepaths at a time in a frustrating game for Colby.
