Colby Finishes Spring Trip With 10-7 Win Over MacMurray

Fort Myers, Fl.- The Colby College White Mules (3-5) ended their games at Spring Training on a winning note with a over MacMurray 10-7 at Terry Park. Brandon Irwin '04 (Sherburne, N.Y.) got the Colby offense going when he worked the MacMurray pitcher to a full count before being issued a base on balls. After stealing second, he used haeds up baserunning to score from second via a fielding error by the shortstop. The Mules would add two more runs in the third when Kevin Brunelle '03 (Augusta, Maine) lined a double in the left-center gap, followed by a single by Matt Simard '02 (Auburn, Maine) that put men on second and third with no outs for the hot hitting B.L. Lippert '04 (Augusta, Maine). Lippert delivered with his third double of the week down the left field line, driving in two runs. Tom Wilson '05 (Seattle, Wash.) then created some instant offense when he singled, stole second base, and then scored from second on a single by Brunelle. Lippert then picked up his third RBI of the day when he singled in Brunelle. The Mules would keep the hot bats rolling in the seventh when they picked up four runs. Simard led off the inning getting hit by a pitch in the back, and then Lippert picked up his third hit of the day with his second double to left field. Eric Roy '04 (Lisbon Falls, Maine) then showed some nice bat control, lifting a fly ball to deep center to score Simard. Vincent Domestico '04 (Ashland, Mass.)then drove in Lippert with a bloop single over the second baseman's head. After stealing second base Domestico scored on a pinch-hit double from Jon Lord '02 (Dublin, N.H.). Pinch running for Lord, Nick Miller '05 (South Burlington, Vt.) scored on a Lucas Cummings '02 (South Paris, Maine) single. Wilson picked up the Mules final run in the ninth with a single and Brunelle double. The Mules were also given some strong pitching from Matt Gibson '03 (Cortland, Ohio) who went eight effective innings, holding MacMurray to 3 earned runs with nine strikeouts, including three of the first four batters he faced. The Mules also got a well pitched ninth inning by Kevin Presbrey '03 (Aurora, IL) who put the game away by holding MacMurray to one hit with one strikeout for no earned runs.
