Colby Baseball Wins Third In A Row, Tops Bowdoin 7-5
Colby vs Bowdoin College
April 5, 2002
Waterville, ME
Waterville, Maine- The Colby College White Mules (5-5) topped the Bowdoin College Polar Bears (7-9) 7-5 at Coombs Field. The Mules will play in Brunswick, Maine tomorrow in a doubleheader versus the Polar Bears starting at Noon. Bowdoin was the first to light up the scoreboard, when in the top of the first Kevin Bougie '04 (Sanford, Maine) continued his hot hitting and took a Brandon Royce '04 (Augusta, Maine) pitch over the left field fence. Royce displayed some gutsy pitching in the top of the second when he got out of a first and third jam with one out. Royce struck out one Bowdoin batter and then forced a fly out to right to end the inning. Tom McMahon '05 (Weymouth, Mass.) smacked a solo homerun in the top of the fourth for Bowdoin to put the score at 2-0. Bowdoin capitalized off a Colby fielding miscue in the fifth when they picked up their third run, but Royce got out of a bases loaded one out jam to keep the margin at 3-0. The Mules bats would get going in the bottom of the fifth when Kevin Brunelle '03 (Augusta, Maine) hit an RBI single to score Jared Cushman '05 (Augusta, Maine) from third. After Matt Simard '02 (Auburn, Maine) got hit by a pitch and B.L. Lippert '04 (Augusta, Maine) was walked, the bases were loaded for Jon Lord '02 (Dublin, N.H.) Lord delivered when he smashed a double over the right fielder's head, clearing the basepaths when Lippert used a nifty slide to get under the Bowdoin catcher tag. The Mules bats would stay hot in the bottom of the sixth when Cushman singled, Philip Geiger '04 (Rye Brook, N.Y.) and Brunelle walked to load the bases for Simard. Simard came through in the clutch with a two run double down the right field line. Lippert then came through with a fly ball deep enough to bring in Brunelle from third. Bowdoin began to get to Royce in the seventh when Manny Lora '04 (Brooklyn, N.Y.) singled and T.J. McLeod '04 (Gorham, Maine) walked. After another Bowdoin batter loaded the bases when he reached on an error, Bougie hit a sacrifice fly, as did Andy Workman '04 (Ipswich, Mass.) to put the score at 7-5. Royce would tighten up in the eighth and ninth, limiting the Bowdoin hitters to two more hits on his way to a complete game. Royce went 9 innings, struck out two, and limited the Bowdoin hitters to four earned runs for his second victory of the season.
