Colby Baseball Falls to Tufts Jumbos 6-4

MEDFORD - Host Tufts clinched the NESCAC East Division pennant with a
6-4 victory over Colby College in baseball action on Friday afternoon.The win lifted Tufts to 19-7-1 overall and 8-1 in the division. Colby
dropped to 8-14 and 3-7.
Tufts senior RF Dan Callahan (Medfield, MA) launched a three-run home
run to right field in the bottom of the second to help Tufts take a 5-1
lead. The three RBIs gave him 118 in his career, breaking the Tufts
record of 115 previously held by Bill Canon (1987-90). Junior CF Evan
Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) also drove in a run with an infield single in
a four-run second inning for Tufts.
Colby clawed back to within 5-4. They notched a single run in the fourth
on junior DH Jay Johnson's (Norwood, MA) second RBI single of the game.
Back-to-back singles by junior SS Kevin Brunelle (Augusta, ME) and
sophomore 2B Vince Domestico (Ashland, MA) followed by a wild pitch, a
passed ball, and a ground out by senior 3B Matt Simard (Auburn, ME)
produced two Colby runs in the seventh. The Jumbos answered with a run
in the bottom of the inning when Callahan led off with a bunt single and
scored on a double over the center fielder's head by senior 1B Tim Ayres
(Irvine, CA).
Tufts junior P Dave Martin (Arlington, MA) improved to 5-1, allowing
seven hits and one earned run in six innings. Colby starter Jim Garrett
(Yarmouth, ME) settled down after a rocky first two innings, but took
the loss. Jumbo junior Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) pitched three
innings for a save.
Brunelle, Domestico and Johnson all had two hits for Colby. Zupancic,
Callahan and sophomore 3B Adam Kacamburas (North Reading, MA) had a pair
each for Tufts.
