 Game Recap:

TUFTS TOPS 20 WINS WITH DOUBLE-HEADER SWEEP OF COLBY
Colby vs Tufts Jumbos
April 27, 2002
Medford, Mass.

MEDFORD - Junior P Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, NY) and sophomore P Randy Newsom (Cincinnati, OH) both earned complete game victories as the Tufts University baseball team swept a double-header from Colby College in NESCAC East Division action on Saturday afternoon. Game one was a 6-1 Tufts win, followed by a 9-3 Tufts win in game two.

After some early difficulties in the first game, Lee settled down to retire 15 straight Colby batters and finish with a three-hitter. The offense scored all the runs he would need with three in the first. Junior SS Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) and sophomore DH Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) had RBI singles in the inning. Shapiro added his second RBI with a sacrifice fly in the second, then senior 1B Tim Ayres (Irvine, CA) had an RBI single in the fourth. Colby loaded the bases with one out against Lee in the first, but he worked out of the jam allowing no runs. The Mules scored their lone run of the game in the second when sophomore C Brandon Irwin (Alexandria, NH) led off with a single and scored on a double by junior SS Kevin Brunelle (Augusta, ME). Lee finished with nine strike outs. Junior Kevin Presbrey (Aurora, IL) went the distance for Colby, which got two of its three hits off Brunelle's bat. Junior LF Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, MD) and Callahan both had three hits and scored two runs for Tufts.

Colby gained a short-lived 1-0 lead off Newsom in game two. Sophomore DH Brandon Royce (Augusta, ME) led off the third with a single, advanced on a Tufts error and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore 2B Vince Domestico (Ashland, MA). Jumbo junior CF Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, OR) turned the game to Tufts' favor with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third, his team-record 10th of the season. The Tufts lead grew to 9-1, highlighted by a three-run fifth. A Callahan single, a sacrifice fly by Ayres and a single by Hickey plated those runs. Colby scored twice in the top of the ninth, including a solo home run by Brunelle. Newsom finished with a six-hitter. Zupancic finished with two hits and four RBIs and Ayres had two hits and two RBIs for the Jumbos. Brunelle had a strong three-game series for Colby, capping it with his first home run. Junior Matt Gibson (Courtland, OH) took the loss for the White Mules.
