CLARK LEADS COLBY TO KEY NESCAC ROAD WIN AT TUFTS COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL FINAL SCORE Colby 68 Tufts 65 MEDFORD, MA Senior tri-captain Sam Clark (Woolwich, ME) posted game-highs with 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the visiting Colby College White Mules to a 68-65 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos in an exciting New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's basketball game on Friday night. Tufts senior co-captain Bobby Mpuku (Westport, CT) attempted two three-pointers to tie the game in the final seconds, but both missed. The second attempt - made possible after co-captain Dan Flaherty (Fairfield, CT) grabbed the rebound after the first miss - spun around the rim, looked like it would drop, then dropped out at the buzzer to give Colby the victory. The White Mules led 36-33 at the half and trailed only briefly in the second half, but the game was close throughout. After the Jumbos took a 47-46 lead on a basket by Tom Bernier (West Roxbury, MA) at 11:58 of the second half, Colby scored the next six points - four by sophomore Sean Flood (Waterville, ME) - to take the lead for good. The Mules led by as many as nine points, 64-55, on a three-pointer by junior Damien Strahorn (Menlo Park, CA) with 4:32 to play. Colby shot well from behind the arc all game, converting 11 of 25 threes (44 percent). Tufts, on the other hand, was just five for 27 from three-land (18.5%). Trailing by six (68-62) after two free throws by Colby's Clark with 36 seconds left, Tufts freshman Phil Barlow (Arlington, MA) cut the margin to 68-65 with a three-pointer at 0:32. The Jumbos had three shots to tie the score. After Colby was called for a charge, Jumbo sophomore Brian Shapiro (Swampscott, MA) missed a three and Tufts fouled on the rebound. Colby, shooting one-and-one, missed and Tufts came down the floor for the last shot. That's when Mpuku missed both three attempts. Colby, tied for first in the NESCAC entering the game, improved to 4-1 in the league and 13-6 overall. Strahorn added 19 points for the Mules, including 11 in the second half.
