SAM CLARK BECOMES 30TH PLAYER IN COLBY HISTORY TO SCORE 1000 CAREER POINTS, COLBY TROUNCES UMF FARMINGTON, ME Sam Clark came to Colby College four years ago as a scrawny youngster, willing to put in the extra time to develop his basketball skills to a level that would eventually etch his name in the school's record book. On Wednesday, Clark became the 30th player in Colby history to cross the 1,000-point plateau, scoring on a fastbreak layup with 7:23 remaining in the first half in a 74-46 win over the University of Maine at Farmington. Clark's basket came on a pass from sophomore Sean Flood and gave the White Mules a 23-6 lead. Clark, a 6-foot-6 post player, is one of just five players in the country averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. He entered Wednesday's game at Dearborn Gymnasium needing seven points and ended up with 16 on 6-of-16 shooting while grabbing 11 rebounds. "I really hadn't thought much about it this season, but as I got closer everyone started to remind me," said Clark. "I was getting a little nervous when my shots wouldn't go down." Coming off a rough 21-point loss to Bates College on Saturday, Clark and his teammates were more concerned about the White Mules' overall effort and put on a defensive clinic that limited the Beavers to just 4-of-23 shooting in the first half. Colby (13-7) held UMF (7-13) without a field goal for 14 minutes while putting together a 27-3 offensive outburst. "The loss was a tough one," said Clark. "We wanted to come out here and show people that we are still the team to beat." Colby's effort was certainly efficient, as the team hit 25-of-57 shots from the field and 14-of-19 from the free throw line, while generating 19 UMF turnovers. Colby, meanwhile, committed just 10 turnovers in the game. UMF finished hitting 13-of-46 from the floor, and although 12 Beavers found the scoring column, none reached double figures. "We had to play hard coming into this game against a team that has been playing well the last couple of games and playing them in their own gym," said Colby coach Dick Whitmore. "We were looking to take their shooters out of the game and we did a great job at that." Senior Zeb Davis gave the White Mules a big offensive boost in the first half, draining three straight 3-pointers - the last giving Colby a 20-6 advantage with 8:32 left in the half. Davis finished with 16 points. Sophomore Sean Flood gave a solid effort coming off the bench to add 11 points - all in the second half -while sophomore Jon Moro buried three 3-pointers in the first half collecting 10 points in the game. "We are an efficient team," said Whitmore.
