GAME RECAP
Colby vs. Wheaton
January 12, 2002
Norton, MA
It was a tale of two halves for the Wheaton College women's
basketball team Saturday afternoon in Emerson Gymnasium, as the Lyons'
34-20 half-time lead was unable to withstand the test of time as they were
outscored 48-17 in the second frame for a 68-51 loss to Colby. Wheaton
falls to 5-7 overall, while the White Mules improve to 5-8. The Lyons
opened the scoring gates right from the tip, posting 11 unanswered points
including a trio of three-point baskets. Off to an equally slow start,
Colby did not get on the board until the 16:41 minute mark. Wheaton
extended its lead to as many as 15 points (21-6) midway through the half.
The Lyons maintained their double-digit advantage for the rest of the
frame, heading into the locker room with a commanding 34-20 lead. Wheaton
senior guard Kerry Deshefy (Clinton, CT/Morgan
School) was the lone double-figure scorer with 10 points. An entirely
different half ensued in the second half, as the wheels began to fall off
for Wheaton. The White Mules slowly cut into their large deficit, closing
the gap to a single point at 38-37 with 11:49 remaining. Colby recorded 17
points through the midway point of the stanza, while holding the Lyons'
offense in check to a mere four points. Wheaton had its last lead at 45-44
with just over seven minutes left, but from that point everything went
wrong for the home team and right for the White Mules. Colby jetted out on
a 15-2 run in just over a four-minute span, leaving Wheaton stunned as
junior guard Bianca Belcher (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston) simply took the game
into her own hands. In that run alone, she contributed eight points en
route to a stellar 17-point second-half performance after being held
scoreless in the first stanza. Deshefy paced Wheaton with 12 points, while
junior Jennifer Schefiliti (Shelton, CT/Shelton) added 11 points in the
loss. Sophomore forward Taryn Brassil (Holyoke, MA/Holyoke) was the game's
rebounding leader with 10 boards to go with her six points. Belcher's 17
points led all
scorers for the White Mules, while holding her own on the boards with six
rebounds. Freshman Wendy Bonner (Lexington, MA/Lexington) contributed 11
points, while junior Sarah Walsh (Catonsville, MD/Seton Keough) recorded
eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.
