Colby Grabs Huge Win Over NESCAC Rival Wesleyan 68-61
Colby vs Wesleyan University
January 19, 2002
Waterville, Maine
Waterville, Maine- The Colby College White Mules (7-9) benefited from some timely shooting and stingy defense and topped the Wesleyan University Cardinals (11-5) 68-61. Colby used a second half surge to gain control of the game, and hit their free throws at the end to put the game away.
In the first half, Wesleyan controlled the tempo as they began by hitting some open jump shots off on their fast break to get an early 9-3 lead. Sarah Walsh ¹03 (Catonsville, Md.) came out strong as she scored Colby¹s first five points off the game. The Mules went on a run and took the lead 10-9 thanks to a hoop from Wendy Bonner ¹05 (Lexington, Mass.). The Cardinals stayed around with Kamica Lewis ¹03 (Jamaica Hills, N.Y.) as she went to the hoop strong as she made a basket and was fouled in the process to put them up 14-10. With just under a minute remaining in the first half, Katy Lawson ¹02 (Mount Desert Island, Maine) scored to make the score 28-26 Wesleyan. Both teams headed into the locker room with the score being 30-28 Wesleyan¹s lead.
Colby jumped out to a 39-36 lead on a Christine O¹Donnell ¹03 (Salem, Mass.) three-point play, with the basket coming on a nifty up and under move. One of the biggest shots of the night for Colby came when Alicia Burrows ¹04 (Meredith, N.H.) buried a three pointer to extend Colby¹s lead to 46-40. Colby would push the lead to double digits when Sarah Walsh nailed a jumper, putting Colby up 50-40. An Ashley Elia ¹04 (Fort Lee, N.J.) basket cut into the Colby lead a few minutes later, and Wesleyan was back within four. Colby would answer with a run of their own though, extending the lead back to eight points when they broke Wesleyan¹s press, culminating in a Sarah Walsh lay-up and three point play. Colby was 13-17 from the line in the second half to cinch the victory. Leading the way for Colby was Walsh with 17 points and 7 rebounds and Bianca Belcher ¹03 (Lewiston, Maine) with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Christine O¹Donnell also had a strong performance for the Mules. Wesleyan was lead by Elia with 13 points, Nora Bowman ¹05 (Guilford, Conn.) with 12 points and Kamica Lewis added 9 points and 10 rebounds.
