Walsh Powers Colby Mules Over Feisty New England Squad 66-62
Colby vs University of New England
January 28, 2002
Waterville, Maine
Sarah Walsh '03 (Catonsville, Md.) was all over the
court and was a rebounding machine for the Colby College White Mules (8-11)
as they topped the New England Nor'easters (10-9) 66-62 in an extremely
scrappy, hard-fought game. Walsh was dominant, finishing with 14 points,
20 rebounds, 7 steals and 5 assists. Walsh's effort came one rebound short
of the Colby women's single game rebounding record.
Both teams came out hot to start the first half, trading baskets on
the first five possessions. The Nor'easters were able to jump out to a
24-16 lead with eight minutes to go behind two three-pointers from Melissa
Roller '04 (E. Sandwich, Mass.). Colby cut the lead back down to five
points when Cara Dionisi '04 (Sudbury, Mass.) matched Roller with a bomb
from behind the arc herself. Bianca Belcher '03 (Lewiston, Maine) ended a
long scoring drought with a three-pointer to cut the lead to 25-22, but a
three-point play by Amanda Brown '04 (Scarborough, Maine) got the New
England lead back to 28-24. Katy Lawson '02 (Mount Desert Isl., Maine)
gave Colby the lead when she joined the three-point parade by draining one
from the corner to put the score at 29-28 Colby. A Dionisi steal and quick
outlet to Lawson for a lay-up put Colby up 31-30 heading into halftime.
The second half would be full of back and forth action, with Sarah
Walsh and Christine O'Donnell '03 (Salem, Mass.) hitting some big shots to
keep the Mules in the game, while Amanda Brown nailed a big three-pointer
from the elbow with three minutes to go to give New England a one point
lead. Colby also received two key baskets on consecutive possessions from
Alyssa Henley '04 (Spokane, Wa.) for some offensive momentum. The score
remained tied at 60-60 with 1:15 to go, and a Walsh lay-up off a designed
in-bounds play gave Colby a two-point lead. Amanda Rodgerson '02 (Hampden,
Maine) and Bianca Belcher traded jumpers on the next two possessions, and a
New England timeout with 20.4 seconds to go had the score at 64-62 Colby.
Colby played tough defense on the next possession, limiting UNE to a tough
low-post shot as the shot clock was winding down, and grabbed the rebound
to seal the victory.
Melissa Stults '04 (Goshen, Ind.) lead the way for UNE with 19
points and 11 rebounds and Rodgerson had 17 in the losing effort. Colby
also received solid efforts from O'Donnell who had 12 points and 8 rebounds
and Chuprevich who had 10 points and 5 rebounds.
