Colby vs Bowdoin College
February 9, 2002
Waterville, Maine
Waterville, Maine- The Colby College White Mules (9-13) hung tough with the league leading Bowdoin College Polar Bears (17-1) for most of the game, but Bowdoin pulled away at the end for a 74-60 victory.
Colby and Bowdoin both started off hot hitting their first two jump shots each. Bowdoin scored for a third time to take the first lead of the game (6-4). The Colby defense held off the Bowdoin attack for the next few minutes keeping the Polar Bears from scoring despite some offensive turnovers and four team fouls. Two Christine O'Donnell 03 (Salem, Mass.) free throws tied the game at six. Bowdoin went on a quick six point run but Colby answered with six straight points of their own all coming from center Kate Chuprevich '04 (Monmouth, Maine) to silence the Bowdoin run. After another Polar Bear score, Colbyıs Sarah Walsh '03 (Catonsville, Md.) made a powerfull spin towards the hoop to draw the foul and score the basket. Walshıs three-point play gave Colby some much needed momentum. Kate Chuprevich scored again on a jumpo shot to bring Colby within one (20-19). Colby then took their first lead of the game on a jump-hook by Chuprevich who continued her dominance with her tenth point of the half. After trading scores Bowdoin regained the lead with a deep three-pointer with two minutes left in the half. The next minute and a half included scores by Colby and Bowdoin and with the score tied at thirty with thirty seconds left Colby held for the last shot. Colby fed the ball down low to their leading scorer Kate Chuprevich who scored with a nice low post move as time expired to give colby the lead (32-30).
The second half started with four Polar bear points, but Colby retaliated with a ten point run of their own being led by Alyssa Henley '04 (Spokane, VA) who scored four of the points to give Colby a 42-34 lead. Up by three with thirteen minutes remaining Colbyıs Bianca Belcher '03 (Lewiston, ME) made a spectacular drive to the hoop and finished it off with an acrobatic lay-in. Bowdoin regained the lead on a three-point shot with just over nine minutes left to play. After a couple baskets from each team multiple Colby fouls allowed Bowdoin to take a five-point lead. An errant pass from a Colby player set up a Bowdoin fast break that resulted in a wide open three-pointer to increase the Bowdoin lead to 61-53 with five minutes remaining in the game. Christine O'Donnell made two free throws with four minutes left to pull the Mules back within five points, unfortunately that is as close as Coby could get it. The Bowdoin Polar Bears then pulled away and cruised on to a 74-60 victory over the Colby College White Mules.
