Colby Tops Trinity in Final Seconds, 56-53
Colby vs Trinity College
February 15, 2002
Waterville, Maine
Waterville, Maine- In a NESCAC showdown, the Colby College White Mules
(10-13) were able to fight off a tough effort from the Trinity Bantams
(12-10) and hold on to win in the final seconds of the game by a score of
56-53.
Colby started the game off with a tremendous defensive showing, not
allowing Trinity to make a shot from the field until six and a half minutes
into the game. Shortly after, with the score 15-6 in Colby's favor,
Trinity went on a run of their own sparked by a three point play and
forcing the Mules to take their first time out. Colby came right back as
Sarah Walsh '03 (Catonsville, MD) put in a lay up, stole the ball back and
took it coast to coast for another two points causing the Bantam s to take
a time out of their own. A big basket by Bianca Belcher '03 (Lewiston, ME)
gave Colby a ten point lead with just under four minutes to play in the
first half. A couple of Trinity jump shots brought the score closer, but
Colby would not go away and answered back with some big baskets. Both
teams continued to play evenly on both sides of the ball as the Mules went
into the locker room with a 27-21 lead.
The second half started very similar to the first, as both teams
came out dominating with their defensive play until Trinity scored first
over two minutes into the half. Colby's Christine O'Donnell '03 (Salem,
Mass.) came up big as she followed a missed shot for the rebound and the
put back. On the next possession Walsh dished off inside to Alyssa Henley
'04 (Spokane, VA) for an additional two and Belcher followed that with a
nice pass inside to Walsh for two more giving the Mules a 36-2. Trinity
wasn't done though, as they found a player wide open down court for an easy
lay up that started a run. A backdoor pass lead to a made foul shot which
was followed by another nice bounce pass into the lane for a basket cutting
the mules lead down to two, 38-36, with under ten minutes to play. The
Bantams later tied the score at 40 on a foul shot with 6:20 left in the
game. Kate Chuprevich '04 (Monmouth, Maine) broke the tie with two made
free throws of her own. The Mules scored a few more points including free
throws from O'Donnell and a huge spin move basket by Walsh. Trinity never
gave up hitting a three pointer , two free throws, and a big lay up to take
their first lead of the game 51-50. Colby called a time out with under a
minute to play and trailing 53-50. Following a Colby steal lead to a
basket and then Belcher hit the front end of a one and one giving the Mules
a 54-53 lead. Trinity had once last chance but failed to make two shots as
Walsh ripped down the rebound and drawing a foul with 0.6 seconds
remaining. Walsh hit her two free throws giving the White Mules 56-53
victory.
