Colby Emerges in Second Half, Tops Amherst 65-44
Colby vs Amherst College
February 16, 2002
Waterville, Maine
Waterville, Maine- After trailing at halftime the Colby College White Mules (11-13) women's basketball team played close to perfection in the second half to lift them over the Amherst Lord Jeffs (11-12) by a score of 65-44.
Amherst came out looking good in the first half scoring on their first possession and not allowing Colby to score until Alyssa Henley '04 (Spokane, VA) put in a power lay up over three minutes into play. Katy Lawson '02 (Mount Desert Is.), playing in her last regular season home game, followed with a fine jump shot to tie the score at four points a piece. Both teams continued to play equally for the next five minutes until Amherst broke out on a hot streak. Colby turned the ball over on two consecutive possessions and let up a three point play and a jump shot to give the Lord Jeffs a 13-10 lead. Amherst's run was stopped short when Bianca Belcher '03 (Lewiston, ME) pulled up in the lane and knocked down a jumper for Colby but The Jeffs answered back immediately with a three pointer. A pair of Sarah Walsh '03 (Catonsville, Md.) free throws, followed by another jump shot by Belcher, kept the Mules within three with five minutes remaining in the first half. With the momentum shifting back and forth, Amherst started to have trouble with Colby's full court press and was forced to take a time out. Both teams managed a few more baskets and went into the locker room with the Lord Jeffs leading 30-26.
The White Mules came out of the locker room ready to play. Amherst scored on their first possession but the Mules retaliated when Walsh made a fantastic spin move for the hoop for two and followed with steal on the other end of the court. This sparked a 16-0 run for the Mules. Belcher drove the lane for a lay up after a fantastic stutter step move and Walsh hit two free throws to tie the game at 32. Colby didn't stop there. Walsh stole the ball on the next Amherst possession and found Belcher wide open downcourt for an easy lay up forcing the Jeffs to take a time out. With twelve minutes left to play an Amherst player made a foul shot to end the run with Colby leading 42-33. Colby then came out with two consecutive defensive stands by Kate Chuprevich '04 (Monmouth, ME) who followed up with a strong three point play. With Walsh continuing to power the inside game Amherst found themselves in early foul trouble sending Colby to the line with two bonus shots with over five minutes to go. Lawson added a terrific spin move jump shot and was followed by a Christine O¹Donnell '03 (Salem, MA) jump shot putting the mules up by fifteen. Caitlin Bourque '04 (Townsend, MA) put the finishing touches on the victory by making two free throws with 45 seconds remaining. Walsh finished the game with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 steals.
