Colby Women's Hoops Pulls Out Toughly Contested Match-up Verse Thomas
Waterville, Maine- In a game that came down to the last minute, the Colby College Women's Basketball Team was fortunate to come away with a win versus a very feisty and hot shooting Thomas College Terriers Women's Hoops Team 73-68. The first half Thomas was in control, getting some nice outside shooting from Erin Lovely '03 (Oxford, Maine) and Katie Morrell '02 (Windham, Maine) as each made two three-pointers for the Terriers. Benefiting from some early Colby foul trouble , Thomas went in with the lead at the half 33-28, but the real fireworks would come in the last few minutes of the game.
The second half began with both teams trading baskets and that proved to be a trend that would hold true for the remainder of the game. With about five minutes to go, both teams started to heat up, maximizing the importance of every possession, and when Alyssa Henley '04 (Spokane, Wa.) cut and took a pretty pass from Wendy Bonner '05 (Lexington, Ma.) and laid it up and in the score was 55-53. Morrell would drill a big three for Thomas, and when Lovely it a runner across the middle to give Thomas a seven point lead with less than four minutes to go, it didnšt look good for Colby. Christine OšDonnell '03 (Salem, Mass.) would drive the lane, which she did well all night for Colby, and would cut into the lead once again. Both teams would trade a few more baskets and it was all tied up at 65-65 with 3:15 to go.
Colby looked to be taking control a little bit when Bonner had a tough drive to the hoop to give Colby the lead, but Lovely had one more big shot left in her, as she buried a three from the elbow. Katy Lawson '02 (Mount Desert, Maine) would have a pretty reverse lay-in followed by another Bonner basket to give Colby the lead 71-68 with :50 seconds to go. Thomas misfired on their next possession, and Cara Dionisi š04 (Sudbury, Mass.) made two big free throws to ice the game for the Mules.
Colby was led by O'Donnell with 16 points and nine rebounds and Kate Chuprevich '04 (Monmouth, Maine) with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Bonner and Lawson also had big games in the frontcourt for Colby. Thomas got big shots from their gunners all night long, and Morrell finished with 19 points (with four three pointers) and Lovely had 13 points and four rebounds. Betsy Pratt '02 (Turner, Maine) also excelled for Thomas with 15 points and 7 rebounds.
