2004-2005 Season Recap
The Colby women started four first-year players for most of the season and lone senior Wendy Bonner led the Mules in scoring and rebounding in a 6-18 season.
The Mules were 5-7 at one point and won their first league game against Tufts University. However, Colby had three of their top six players suffer season-ending knee injuries in the second half of the season.
Bonner earned second team NESCAC honors while leading Colby in scoring (13.1), rebounding (9.0) and steals (47). She is the only NESCAC athlete to earn all-conference honors in consecutive seasons of softball, field hockey and basketball dating back to last year.
Katie McCabe, Regina Wohl, Tanya Rosbash and Kathleen Nicholson all showed promise in their first seasons. McCabe averaged 11.5 points and 6.9 rebounds, Wohl averaged 9.2 points and shot 37 percent from 3-point range, while Rosbash and Nicholson both averaged about eight to nine points per game.
2004-2005 Season Preview
Patricia O'Brien heads into her 10th year at Colby with one of her youngest teams ever. The Mules have just one senior, no juniors, four sophomores, and seven first-year players.
The lone senior is a good one in captain Wendy Bonner (Lexington, Mass.). Bonner, a three-sport athlete at Colby, led the Mules in scoring (11.2), rebounding (9.2) and field goal percentage (.505) on a 9-16 team.
O'Brien will have first-year players in the starting lineup. Regina Wohl (Westbrook, Maine) battled injury problems her final two high school seasons, but is healthy now and had a good preseason. Wohl will play the shooting guard spot.
Sophomore Kate Riley (Ipswich, Mass.) and first-year Kathleen Nicholson (Tuftonboro, N.H.) are battling for the point guard spot. Sophomore Laura Williamson (Manchester, Conn.) averaged 6.3 points per game last year and will see time at the guard spots.
Sophomore forward Meg Davis (Hopkinton, Mass.) had injury problems last year and averaged seven points in five games. Katie McCabe (Watertown, Conn.), another first-year player, can play center or the power forward position. Sophomore forward Molly Rice (South Portland, Maine) averaged 3.8 points and 3.9 rebounds a year ago.
Tanya Rosbash (Newton, Mass.) could see starting time or quality minutes off the bench at guard or forward.
Program Overview
Basketball, one of the oldest varsity programs for women at Colby, plays in the highly competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Since the program's inception in 1968, women's basketball has developed a rich tradition of success by winning 55 percent of its games over its 37-year history. The Mules have won four ECAC Championships (1984, 1985, 1991, 2001). The program also has garnered 10 Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) titles and one co-championship since 1980.
Under head coach Patricia O'Brien's direction, the Colby Mules have established themselves as a top team in New England. The program has achieved a 57 percent winning percentage over the past 10 seasons while playing what is arguably one of the most competitive schedules in New England. Eight of the past nine seasons have included post-season bids.
