The Colby College crews each opened the spring portion of the season with victories in races against Wesleyan and Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond. The Colby women's varsity eight is ranked third in NCAA Division III and showed why in beating 11th-ranked Wesleyan and No. 16 WPI. The Mules had a winning time of 6 minutes, 56.75 seconds over the 2,000-meter course. WPI was second in 7:00.91 and Wesleyan took third at 7:06.61. The Colby women placed second in the country at last year's NCAA Division III championships. The Colby men's varsity eight had a closer race with a winning time of 6:12.15. Wesleyan was second in 6:14.25 and WPI placed third with a 6:15.23. In women's novice eight racing, Colby had a time of 7:34.77 in beating WPI (8:02.41). The Colby men's novice eight placed third (6:48.38) behind WPI and UMass-Amherst and in front of UMass-Lowell. Colby is right back in action on Sunday against Amherst and Connecticut College in races at Lowell, Mass.
