Stew Stokes Stew Stokes, Head Coach

Stew Stokes is entering his fifth year at Colby. Since his arrival the program has more than doubled in size, and the women’s crew won the College’s only NCAA Championship in a team sport by claiming the 2003 Division III title. Prior to his arrival at Colby, Stokes coached at Trinity College and the University of Massachusetts. A 1990 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Stokes was a four-time winner of the Head of the Charles Regatta, a four-time U.S. National Champion, and a member of the men’s lightweight eight on the 1993 United States Rowing Team. He and his wife, Bess, live in Oakland, Maine, with their daughter, Maggie, and were expecting their second child in August 2004.

Pat Tynan
Pat Tynan, Assistant Coach

Pat is in his fourth season as the assistant rowing coach at Colby, where he is responsible for coaching the freshman men's and women's crews. Before his arrival, Pat was the assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts for two years, where his crews medaled in the New England and Atlantic-10 Rowing Championships. During his two years at U-Mass, Pat also served as an assistant coach at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass.

Pat's rowing career began in 1990 at St. John's High School in Shrewsbury, Mass., and continued at the University of Massachusetts where he rowed in the varsity lightweight eight for four years earning numerous medals at the New England Rowing Championships and the Champion International Collegiate Regattas. After graduating in 1998 with a degree in exercise science, Pat spent the summer with the US Lightweight Development Team at Riverside Boat Club in Boston, winning three medals at the American Rowing Championships.

Emily Allen, Assistant Coach

Emily Allen will be a volunteer assistant coach for Stew Stokes and the men and women's crews. Allen, a member of the Colby Class of 2003, was in the varsity eight boat that won the Grand Final (places 1-6) and led the Mules to the national title at the NCAA Division III Rowing Championships this past June in Indianapolis. Allen was a co-captain of last year's women's crew.
