Stew Stokes is entering his seventh year at Colby. Since his arrival the program has more than doubled in size, and the women's crew won the College's only NCAA Championship in a team sport by claiming the 2003 Division III title.

Prior to his arrival at Colby, Stokes coached at Trinity College and the University of Massachusetts. A 1990 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Stokes was a four-time winner of the Head of the Charles Regatta, a four-time U.S. National Champion, and a member of the men's lightweight eight on the 1993 United States Rowing Team.

Stokes and his wife, Bess, live in Oakland, Maine, with their daughters, Maggie and Sally.

Mike Kerner begins his first year as assistant coach for the Colby crews after spending six years as an assistant at the University of Rhode Island. Kerner also earned his bachelor’s degree and rowed at Rhode Island.

Kerner helped coach crews that repeatedly made the grand finals and won medals at the New England Rowing Championships. The URI varsity men’s 8 won a bronze medal at the 2004 ECAC National Invitational Regatta and also advanced one round at the Henley Royal Regatta in England.

Kerner, a native of Maine, was a captain for URI during his rowing days. During his coaching stay, Kerner helped the women’s crew at URI make the transition to a varsity sport.

Kerner also worked with the Narragansett Boat Club as their Director of Rowing and coached their competitive program for junior boys and girls. He is a Level III (highest level offered) certified coach by U.S. Rowing.
