 2003 Season Outlook

Season Preview

The brilliant red and gold hues that mark a Maine autumn heighten the excitement of the Colby cross-country season. The Mules will have a new head coach in Todd Coffin ’83, who replaces Jim Wescott.

Consistently in the hunt, the Colby harriers have captured New England Small College Athletic Conference team titles in 1981, 1987, and 1990 and a first place tie in 1993. The annual run over the carriage trails at Acadia National Park and the miles of running trails on and adjacent to campus provide stimulating training runs on a daily basis.

Nat Brown ’04, a three-time NCAA Championship participant, will lead three members of Colby’s 2002 ECAC Championship team into the 2003 season. Brown and Eric Reinauer ’04, both two-time All-ECAC honorees, will be joined by fellow tri-captain John Tyson ’04 and Peyton McElyea ’06, a provisional NCAA qualifier in the 1,500-meter run during the 2003 spring season with a time of 3:54.61.

The team will look to a host of strong freshmen to fill in the fifth, sixth, and seventh slots. Jeff Alden ’07 (Caribou, Maine), a member of the U.S. Junior Biathlon Team, the State of Maine Class C 1,600-meter record holder at 4:17.12, and the 2002 New England high school 1,600-meter champion, and Sam Crocker ’07 (Yarmouth, Maine), a 9:42 two-miler, look to be good candidates to strengthen the Colby harriers.

High performance in the classroom has long been a mark of Colby’s harriers, whose success as graduates speaks of their disciplined lives. The camaraderie of small athletic teams takes on a special meaning as Colby harriers support each other on Mayflower Hill and remain in touch long after graduation.
