Todd Coffin
Head Coach

Todd Coffin ’83 has been named Colby’s 19th head coach of cross country and track and field. Replacing his mentor, Jim Wescott, who has retired after 25 years at Colby, Coffin brings a high level of energy to the three athletic seasons.

Colby’s first NCAA champion in any sport, Coffin captured the 1983 NCAA Division III steeplechase crown. He finished in sixth place at the NCAA meet as a sophomore, took second in the country as a junior, and culminated his three-time All-American career at Colby with a national title as a senior. Coffin’s winning time was 8:56.37.

Coffin earned a B.A. in geology from Colby in 1983 and an M.S. in geology from Purdue University in 1986. Since his graduation from Colby and Purdue, Coffin has worked as a geologist in Texas, Massachusetts, and Maine.

Coffin was head coach of men’s cross country and track and field at the University of Southern Maine in 1994-95. He also was an assistant cross country coach at Bowdoin from 1990 to 1993.

An avid runner, Coffin has stayed active in the running world. He finished fifth in the Masters National Indoor Mile Run and won the Masters New England Half Marathon in 2002. He has run marathons as well, finishing 17th (2:19:36) in the Houston Marathon in 1989 and 47th (2:27:04) in the Boston Marathon in 1990.

Coffin was named the Maine Runner of the Year in 1994 by New England Running magazine and was voted Maine Runner of the Year by the Maine Track Club in 1993. He had his track shoes retired by Colby in 1993. Coffin also earned Colby’s Donald P. Lake Award in 1983 for scholarship, leadership, and athletics.
