Colby Field Hockey Team Defeats Southern Maine, 2-1

The Colby College women's field hockey team (5-6) defeated the University of Southern Maine (8-9) in Wednesday afternoon competition, 2-1.

The White Mules and the Huskies traded field position the first ten minutes of the game. Southern Maine was able to take advantage after ten minutes, putting pressure on the Mules' defense, and scored the first goal of the game at 19:22 remaining in the first half. Sasha Ilkovich was able to shoot the ball past Mules' goalkeeper Carrie Torrisi (02, Andover, Ma) off a pass by Becky Manson.

Colby came right back and scored their first goal one-minute later at 18:18. Junior Marcia Ingraham (Georgetown, Ma) was able to shoot a pass form Kara Hubbard (02, Windham, NH) that was deflected off of Lyndsay Peters's (03, Freeport, Me) stick into the Huskies' goal. The first half ended in a 1-1 tie.

The second half saw the Mules take the offensive and drive the ball close to Southern Maine's goal. Colby was determined to take the lead and they did so with 21:03 remaining in the game. Colby's Peters fought off Southern Maine defenders and scored on a pass from junior Brook Brisson (Lincoln, Vt). The Mules were never going to look back as they kept pressure on the Huskies' defense and ended the game with their fifth victory of the season.

Colby junior Becca Bruce (Exeter, NH) led the Mules' charge with 15 shots on goal. Colby goalkeeper Carrie Torrisi recorded three saves.

Colby returns to action on Saturday, October 14, when they host NESCAC rival Middlebury College at 11:00am.
