Waterville, Maine The Colby College women's field hockey team (5-7, 1-6 in NESCAC) lost to Middlebury College (4-8, 3-5 in NESCAC) in their last home contest of the season, 4-1. Colby took the offensive early and scored the first goal of the game. Junior Sarah Browne (Vassalboro, Me) was unassisted when she put the ball past Middlebury goalkeeper Molly Fitzgerald at 26:10 remaining in the first. This was to be Colby's sole goal of the day as Middlebury came roaring back. The Panthers woke up after Colby scored and controlled the field for the remainder of the first half. Middlebury's Billie Goldman scored an unassisted goal against the White Mules' goalkeeper Jane Stevens (01, Chevy Chase, Md) at the 20:37 mark. Three minutes later, Goldman assisted Sarah Theall with a goal at 17:11 to put the Panthers up 2-1. Middlebury's Keely Murphy put the visitors up 3-1, with the assistance of Kate Perine, at 10:49 remaining in the half. Middlebury's lead at the half was 3-1. In the second half, the ball control was more evenly matched as both teams stood their ground. Middlebury, however, was able to move the ball down the field more efficiently than the Mules. The Panthers' Theall was once again able to penetrate the Colby defense and took a pass from teammate Char Glessner past the Mules' Stevens. Colby had three more opportunities to score, but to no avail as Middlebury won the game 4-1. Colby's Sari Gilbert (04, Marblehead, Ma) led the Mules with seven shots on goal. Middlebury's Glessner and Theall each recorded five shots on goal. The Mules' Stevens recorded 13 saves, while her counterpart for Middlebury, Fitzgerald, recorded 15 saves. Colby will travel to Lewiston, Maine on Tuesday, October 17, to face Bates in the first of two CBB games for the Mules, at 4:00pm. Middlebury will host St. Michael's on Thursday, October 19, for a 2:30 game.
