Bowdoin Rolls Past Colby, 3-1 - Polar Bears earn No. 1 seed in NESCAC tourney

BRUNSWICK, Maine

Bowdoin College sophomore Leah McClure (Rothesay, N.B.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Polar Bear field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Colby in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) on Saturday. With the victory, Bowdoin finishes the season with a 13-1 mark overall and a 7-1 mark in the NESCAC, giving them the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the conference tournament.

McClure put the Polar Bears up 1-0 as she won a scramble in front of the net and put the ball past Colby senior goalie Jane Stevenson (Chevy Chase, Md.). The lead expanded to 2-0 before the end of the first half as Bowdoin executed off a penalty corner. Junior Sarah Banister (Stonington, Conn.) hammered a shot past Stevens with assists going to juniors Allison Scaduto (Allenwood, N.J.) and Kristi Perine (Middlebury, Vt.).

Bowdoin pushed the lead to 3-0 late in the second half when McClure again converted in front of the cage. Colby (6-8, 2-7 NESCAC) trimmed the lead to 3-1 with less than three minutes remaining when junior Marcia Ingraham (Georgetown, Mass.) scored off a penalty corner as junior Kara Hubbard (Windham, N.H.) and sophomore Lyndsay Peters (Freeport, Maine) picked up assists.

Stevens ended the game with three saves while first-year Jill McDonald (Hudson, Quebec) turned away nine Colby shots.
