Amherst vs. Colby
(NESCAC
First-Round)
BRUNSWICK,
Maine - The Amherst College field hockey team avenged an earlier season loss to
Colby this afternoon, shutting down the White Mules in the second half of a 2-1
win in the first round of the NESCAC Tournament. The Lord Jeffs advance to the
NESCAC Semifinals where they will face top-seed Middlebury in Vermont next
Saturday.
The Lord
Jeffs opened the scoring when Robin Ackerman put home a rebound from Abigail
Ouiment at 30:52 to give Amherst an early 1-0 edge. The White Mules bounced
back behind strong goalkeeping by Carrie Torrisi, who made three diving stops
within a five minute span in the first half. Colby was rewarded for their
efforts at 15:31, when Marcia Ingraham fired off a penalty corner set-up by
Brook Brisson to knot the game at 1-1. Amherst regained the lead shortly before
halftime when Ouimet played a beautiful cross through the crease to Marcy
Busch. Busch tapped home the goal on the doorstep for what proved to be the
game-winner at 6:23.
The White
Mules had few chances to tie the game in the second half as Amherst controlled
the pace of play. Beth Sensing made four stops in the win, while Torrisi made 23
stops for the White Mules.
