2004 Season Preview
The 2004 Colby field hockey team returns a veteran team looking to take the next step and challenge for a NESCAC championship. Many of the top returning players are seniors back from a 9-6 team.
Two-time All-American Wendy Bonner '05 will be back for her senior season. She had 15 goals and three assists in 2003 and has a good chance to become the all-time leading field hockey scorer at Colby.
Sophomore goalkeeper Molly Rice '07 (South Portland, Maine) will play in front of what will be an all-senior defense in 2004. Kristin Putnam '05 (Oakland, Maine) was an all-region player at sweeper, and teammates Lauren Smith '05 (Cohasset, Mass.) and Melissa Mullen '05 (Green Township, N.J.) are both exceptional defenders.
Michaelyn Bortolotti '05 (Hanover, Mass.) was second in scoring with two goals and nine assists from her midfield position.
Program Overview
Colby competes in the 11-member New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), comprised of select NCAA Division III colleges that emphasize academic and athletic excellence. The Mules also participate in the CBB Championship, an annual in-state series with NESCAC rivals Bates and Bowdoin. Colby won the CBB title in 2004 with a home victory over Bowdoin and a road win at Bates.
Many Colby field hockey players also play varsity basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, softball, or another intercollegiate sport. Players also are involved in campus activities such as student government, music, drama, and community service.
Colby's field hockey program began play in 1968 and only seven head coaches have led the team since. The Mules have had two national All-Americans and 13 regional All-Americans.
