COLBY DEFEATS BOWDOIN, 34-7, FOR CBB CHAMPIONSHIP, SHARE OF NESCAC TITLE

WATERVILLE, Maine

The White Mules of Colby College (7-1) claimed their tenth outright CBB Championship on Saturday by defeating visiting Bowdoin College (0-8), 34-7. The Mules can also lay claim to a share of the NESCAC title as the season ended in a three-way tie for first with Amherst and Middlebury. Amherst, the only team to defeat Colby, defeated Williams (5-3) 20-12, and Middlebury, whose only lose came at the hands of the Mules, defeated Tufts (2-6) 27-0. In the process the duo of Pat Conley (03, Bath, Me) and Danny Noyes (02, Silver Lake, NH) set new school and conference records.

This season alone, Conley recorded 250 passing attempts, 139 completions, 1,996 yards passing, 2, 082 total offensive yards, and threw 14 touchdown passes. His yards passing total for the season is a new NESCAC record. He has also become the fifth all-time quarterback in the NESCAC in passing completions.

Noyes became the all-time leader for Colby and the NESCAC with 872 receiving yards in a season. He has also caught 54 passes and ranks tied for third all-time in the NESCAC in receptions in a season.

Head coach Tom Austin praised his entire team, "Ever since April the guys have said that they were going to go 8-0 this season. That confidence and the belief in themselves really proved how outstanding these young men truly are."

The start of this game did not appear to be an easy game for Colby. The fifth play of Colby's opening drive saw Bowdoin's Sean Lanigan (01, Canton, Ma) tip Conley's pass, catch the deflection in mid air, and run 55 yards for the first score of the game. Alex Tatums's (01, Acton, Ma) point after attempt was good as the Polar Bears jumped to an early 7-0 lead.

Two possessions later, Colby moved the ball from the Bowdoin 48-yard line to the five-yard line in 11 plays. On the next play from scrimmage, Conley found Don Williams (03, Owl's Head, Me) in the end zone. Keith Jonassens' (02, Albion, Me) extra point was good as Colby tied the score, 7-7.

The Colby defense stifled Bowdoin and allowed only 119 yards. The Polar Bears were only able to move the ball 22 yards during their next possession. The ensuing punt placed the Mules at their own 20.

Colby marched down the field 58 yards to Bowdoin's 22. Junior Rashad Randolph (New York, NY) took Conley's handoff into open daylight and rushed in for the touchdown. The extra point was good and Colby led Bowdoin, 14-7, with 14:17 remaining in the second quarter.

Two possessions later, Colby drove from their own 46 to Bowdoin's five. The Mules could not penetrate the Bowdoin defense and settled for a field goal. Jonassen's kick was good from 22 yards. The lead was 17-7, Colby, at the half.

Colby's showed that they were prepared to bury the Polar Bears in the second half. Bowdoin started the half on their 15-yard line. That was as far as they would get as Colby forced them back to the one-yard line. Matt Hession's (03, Bedford, NH) end zone kick reached the Bowdoin 41-yard line as the Mules Lee Carlson (03, Braintree, Ma) returned the ball to the Polar Bear 34. Colby could go no further than the 20 and settled for a 37-yard Jonassen field goal. The Mules now led 20-7.

The Mules wasted little time on their next possession. Starting at their 38-yard line, the Mules used eight plays to find the Polar Bear end zone. The point after attempt was good as Colby stood firm at 27-7

Colby started the fourth quarter at Bowdoin's 45-yard line. Seven plays later the Mules were on the one-yard line. Noyes took the handoff and bulldozed his way into the end zone. With the extra point Colby's lead increased to 34-7. This sealed the win for the Mules and ended a well played season for the entire football team.
