Tom Austin, Head Coach
Assistant Coaches
Tom Austin begins his 15th year as Colby's head coach, ranking among the senior NESCAC football coaches in continuous service at his school. He is the school's career leader in football coaching victories, compiling a 47-64-1 overall record during his tenure on Mayflower Hill. Austin has guided the Mules to five winning seasons in the last eight years, and his Colby teams have won or shared the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) in-state championship during nine of the past 11 seasons.
Austin is a 1963 graduate of the University of Maine, where he started at quarterback for the Black Bears. He served as head coach at Lawrence High School in Fairfield, Maine, from 1965 to 1966. In 1968 he became an assistant football coach at Ithaca College before coaching at Boston University from 1969 to 1973. The Lima, Ohio, native arrived at Colby after a 14-year stint as head coach at Bridgton (Maine) Academy, where he compiled a 60-34-4 record.
Austin credits much of Colby's gridiron success to the experience and continuity of a veteran coaching staff led by Ed Mestieri, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the past 11 years; Tom Dexter, defensive coordinator, defensive secondary coach and strength coach for the past 11 years; and Mark Godomsky, offensive backfield coach for the past six years.
Austin also serves as Colby's director of intramurals and previously served as assistant women's lacrosse coach.
