Led by the running of All-American sophomore Aaron Stepka (Farmington, Conn.) and the leadership on defense of senior linebacker Mike Moran (Bedford, N.H.), the Colby College football team won four of the last six games to finish the season 4-4.

Stepka finished the season as the top rusher in NCAA Division III at 171.3 yards per game. He also broke the New England Small College Athletic Conference single-season rushing record. Stepka was named a Hewlett Packard All-America Third Team selection for his big season. He was also on the Football Gazette All-East Region first team, the NESCAC first team and on the New England Writers Division II/III All-Star team.

Stepka rushed for 1,370 yards on a NESCAC record 293 carries behind an offensive line that allowed just seven sacks in eight games. Stepka also broke a 30-year-old school record for single-season rushing by passing Peter Gorniewicz, who had 1,170 yards in 1972.

Stepka led the NESCAC in rushing yards, rushing yards per game, total carries, all-purpose yards (173.9) and was tied for first in the league in total touchdowns (11).

Senior quarterback Pat Conley (Bath, Maine) threw for 854 yards and six touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Lee Carlson (Braintree, Mass.) had 36 catches and senior tight end Ian MacPherson (Waltham, Mass.) had 28 receptions for 284 yards. MacPherson was named as a NESCAC first-team all-star and was a second-team selection on the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast team.

Colby's defense allowed just 15 points per game, the second lowest total in NESCAC. Moran, Luke Webster (Manchester, N.H.) and Jeff Owen (Whitman, Mass.) were the top three tacklers for the Mules. Sophomore Brandon Irwin (Sherburne, N.Y.) was fourth in tackles and led the team in interceptions with four.

Moran has earned four postseason honors: NESCAC first team, ECAC Northeast first team, New England Football Writers Division II/III All-Star team, and Football Gazette All-East Region third team. Moran led the Mules in tackles per game and for the second year in a row, earned NESCAC first-team honors.

Senior defensive end Mike DiStefano (Lexington, Mass.) was also named to the NESCAC All-Conference First Team. Owen, Irwin and offensive lineman Anthony DiSotto (Jay/Jay, Maine) were selected to the second team.

Senior defensive back Alex Burgess (Manchester, Mass.) and junior defensive back Jeremy Jamieson (Stoneham, Mass.) were each honored as NESCAC All-Academic selections. DiStefano was named to the Verizon Academic District 1 (New England and New York schools) College Division Football Team.
