Tom Austin begins his 17th season as Colby's head coach in 2002 and is NESCAC's longest tenured football coach. He is also Colby's career leader in football coaching victories, with a 58-69-1 overall record and 11 Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) titles. After guiding the Mules to a 7-1 record and a share of the first-ever NESCAC Championship in 2000, Austin was named NESCAC Coach of the Year and Division II/III Coach of the Year by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.

Austin credits much of Colby's gridiron success to the experience and continuity of a veteran coaching staff led by Ed Mestieri, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the past 14 years; Tom Dexter, defensive coordinator, defensive secondary coach and strength coach for the past 14 years; and Mark Godomsky, offensive backfield coach for the past eight years.

Austin also serves as Colby's director of intramurals.
