2004 Season Recap

Colby first-year head coach Ed Mestieri helped the Mules to a 6-2 record and the CBB (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) Championship. Colby finished in a tie for second place in the league with Amherst and Williams.

The Mules were second in NCAA Division III in scoring defense at just 8.1 points per game allowed and were 18th in the country in total defense. Senior linebacker Wayne Harrington, a NESCAC first team all-conference selection, led Colby in total tackles (79), tackles for loss (18), pass break-ups (6), and fumble recoveries (3). Harrington also was named to the New England Football Writers Division II/III All-New England Team and the ECAC Northeast squad.

Senior defensive end Peter Sherman also earned first team league honors, ECAC honors, and was one of just two NESCAC players to be invited to play in the Aztec Bowl in Mexico after leading Division III in forced fumbles with six in seven games. Junior defensive tackle Mike Poplaski and senior safety Mike Civitello earned second team conference honors.

Junior offensive tackle Daniel Oliphant was named to the NESCAC first team and to the ECAC team. He helped open holes for first-year running back Chris Bashaw (526 yards) and pass protected for quarterback Justin Smith (1,461 yards). Oliphant and defensive lineman Conor Sullivan have been named captains for next year.

Junior kicker John Goss also earned NESCAC first team, All-New England and ECAC honors by going 9-for-13 in field goal attempts and 17-for-19 in extra points. Goss only had misses from more than 40 yards and had a long boot of 45 yards. He also punted for a 37.5 yard average and 12 of his 49 punts went inside the 20-yard line.

Wide receiver Jon Vacca earned team most improved honors on the offensive side of the ball, while Josh Berman and Mike Bracco were most improved defensively.

Mike Booras and Dan Giuliani won the Paul "Ginger" Frazier Award for exhibiting such qualities as unselfishness, loyalty to the team and in all aspects of being truly a team player. Also, Chris Duncombe won the Jorgen Bocklage Award for a player who has overcome adversity and only through perseverance and physical hardness has continued to play.

Besides winning the coveted CBB title for the second straight year, Colby went 4-0 at home and went the final 13 quarters at Seaverns Field without giving up a point. The final four quarters of that streak was a 23-0 pounding of Bowdoin in the season finale.

Bracco, Dave Civitello, Giuliani, Harrington, Steve Kasperski and Tom Wilson all earned NESCAC Fall All-Academic honors.

Program Overview

Colby competes in the 11-member New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), comprised of select NCAA Division III colleges that emphasize academic and athletic excellence. The Mules also participate in an annual in-state series with NESCAC rivals Bates and Bowdoin, a series that incorporates two of the longest-running football rivalries in the nation. Colby has earned considerable success in CBB competition in recent years, compiling a 24-7-1 record since 1988.

Studying abroad in the spring is an option for Colby football players, and in the past players have studied in London, Spain, Australia, Ireland, Africa, and South America.

Colby has a wide geographical mix among its players, with student athletes from all over the United States. Many Colby football alumni remain active in the game. Eric DeCosta '92, the Director of College Scouting for the NFL's Baltimore Ravens, is the youngest Director of College Scouting in the NFL. Colby alumni are also coaching at colleges and universities such as the University of Southern California, Syracuse, Virginia, and New Hampshire.
