Colby Crushes Middlebury

10/3/98

WATERVILLE, Maine -- After nine straight losses dating back to last fall, the Colby College football team celebrated its home opener with a 34-18 trouncing of Middlebury.

Thomas Keblin (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Reg.) put Colby on the board early, capping a 15-play, 78-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run with 7:41 left in the first quarter. Colby then increased its lead on the first play of the second quarter, when Nathan Bradley (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan) found a wide open David McGeehan (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) in the back corner of the end zone.

With 6:50 left in the first half, Keblin again scored as he finished off a 5-play, 83-yard drive with a 4-yard plunge, pushing the Colby lead to 21-0. After the White Mules' stiffling defense pinned Middlebury deep in its own end, Joe Kingsbury (Concord, N.H./Concord) blocked Zac Cambell's (Cape May, N.J./Middle Township) punt and recovered the loose ball for a tounchdown pushing the score to 28-0.

The Panthers added two late scores, including a 6-yd TD reception from John Wenner (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country) to A.J. Husband (Springfield, Vt./Springfield). The catch was one of Husband's 10 receptions on the day, and the 95th of his career, breaking Middlebury's all-time school mark.

Keblin was the offensive star for the White Mules, as he carried 29 times for 177 yards, including a 60-yard run that set up one of Keith Jonassen's (Albion, Maine/Lawrence) two field goals on the day. Bradley completed 10 of 17 pass attempts for 145 yards as he filled in for the injured Matt Smith (Middlebury, Vt./Middlebury Union) at quarterback for Colby.

The White Mules' defense allowed only 199 total yards, and recorded six sacks on the day.
