Heavy rain greatly affected both teams' play, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead when a bad snap sailed over the head of Colby punter Darren Ireland (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman) on the White Mules' first possession, giving the Cardinals excellent field position with just over four minutes into the game. Soon after, quarterback Jake Fay (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) hit Matt Perceval (Box Elder, S.D./Dougals) with a two-yard touchdown strike to give Wesleyan a 6-0 lead.
Colby struck back later in the first quarter, when tailback Thomas Keblin (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Reg.) capped a five-play, 64-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Keith Jonassen's (Albion, Me./Lawrence) extra point gave the White Mules a 7-6 lead. Jonassen then hit a 26-yard field goal to make it 10-6, but Wesleyan capitalized on a Colby fumble when John Pascucci (Lynnfield, Mass./St. JohnUs Prep.) rumbled in from 20 yards out to give the Cardinals a 13-10 halftime advantage.
Early in the second half, another Colby fumble gave Weslyan the ball on the White Mules' 20-yard line. Just under two minutes later, Tom Themistocles (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) ran in for the score from 17 yards out, pushing the Cardinal lead to 20-10. A 26-yard field goal by Curt Younkin (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Cleveland Heights) made it 23-10 with 13 minutes left in the game.
Colby got another touchdown from Keblin, this time on a 9-yard strike from Nathan Bradley (Norridgewock, Me./Skowhegan), but would get no closer, as Wesleyan added a late score to run away with the victory, 19-17.
The two teams committed a total of 20 penalties for 207 yards, including several personal fouls after the whistle.
