The White Mules jumped on the board early when first-year Keith Jonassen (Albion, Me./Lawrence) nailed a 34-yard field goal with 8:29 left in the first quarter to give Colby a 3-0 lead. The White Mules would take that advantage all the way into the fourth quarter.
With both offenses clearly sputtering, Amherst resorted to trickery in the fourth quarter. With 6:35 left in the contest, tailback Darin Byrne threw a halfback pass to wide receiver Matt Hall, resulting in a 32-yard touchdown that gave the Lord Jeffs a 7-3 lead. That would prove to be all the offense either team could muster, and the White Mules fell by the final of 7-3. The loss dropped Colby's record to 1-3, while Amherst improved to 3-1.
Nathan Bradley (Norridgewock, Me./Skowhegan) completed 14 of 37 passes for 152 yards for the White Mules, but also tossed three interceptions. A trio of quarterbacks for Amherst combined to throw for 135 yards, going 13 for 28 with a touchdown and an interception.
Thomas Keblin (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional) led the ground attack for Colby, rushing 19 times for 53 yards, while Miguel Gonzalez (Oxford, Me./Oxford Hills) caught six passes for 79 yards to lead the receiving corps. Hall led the Lord Jeffs' receivers with three catches for 62 yards.
Defensively, the White Mules got big games from Aaron Coltin (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry), who made seven tackles, Ryan Aldrich (Middlebury, Vt./Middlebury Union), who had six tackles and a sack, and Darren Ireland (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman), who made five tackles and broke up three passes.
