Tom Austin Tom Austin, Head Coach

Fourteenth-year head coach Tom Austin ranks as one of the senior members of the New England Small College Athletic Conference football coaching fraternity in continuous service at his school. He has led Colby to a solid 32-31-1 record during the 1990's, including five winning seasons in the past eight years.

Austin, a native of Lima, Ohio, ranks as the winningest coach in Colby history. He currently boasts a 44-59-1 overall record on Mayflower Hill, and his Mules have won or shared nine of the last CBB championships in the past eleven years.

A 1963 graduate of the University of Maine, where he played quarterback for the Black Bears, Austin served as head coach at Lawrence High in Fairfield, Maine, in 1965 and 1966. In 1968 he joined the coaching staff at Ithaca College before heading to Boston University from 1969 to 1973. Austin came to Colby after 14 seasons as head coach at Bridgton Academy in Bridgeton, Maine, where he compiled a 60-34-4 record.

Austin also serves as Colby's director of intramurals, and has served as assistant coach of the Mules' women's lacrosse team.

Tom Dexter Tom Dexter, Defensive Coordinator, Defensive Secondary, Strength Coach

Tom Dexter begins his eleventh season on Colby's football coaching staff. A 1987 graduate of SUNY-Cortland, Dexter played quarterback and defensive back while in college. In 1988 he earned his master's degree from Cortland while serving as a defensive line coach there. Dexter then went to Cornell University for one year, where he was the defensive secondary coach and defensive coordinator of the freshman football team. Dexter also serves as head baseball coach and director of the fitness center at Colby.

Ed Mestieri Ed Mestieri, Offensive Coordinator, Offensive Line

Ed Mestieri returns to the Colby coaching staff for his eleventh season working with the offensive line and also serving as offenive coordinator. Mestieri began his coaching career at Kent State after graduating from Springfield College in 1976. He coached at Dartmouth from 1979 to 1981. He came to Colby after seven sesons at Norwich University, where he served as offensive coordinator and earned his master's degree. Mestieri also serves Colby as its assistant athletic director for operations.

Mark Godomsky Mark Godomsky, Offensive Backfield

Godomsky is a sixth-year memeber of the Colby football staff, and also serves as the Mules' head alpine skiing coach. A graduate of Mt. Blue High School in nearby Farmington, Maine, Godomsky was a four-year football player and three-year member of the ski team at Bates College, where he graduated in 1991. Godomsky coached alpine skiing at Colby from 1991 to 1993 and then returned to Mayflower Hill in 1994 He also has served as assistant athletic director and assistant alpine program director at Carrabasset Valley Academy in Kingfield, Maine.

Chris Kempton Chris Kempton, Defensive Line

Kempton is a third-year member of the Colby football staff after several highly successful years as a Maine high school coach. The University of Maine graduate was an assistant coach at Old Town High School in 1991, then served as head coach at his alma mater, Winthrop High School, from 1992 to 1995. His teams compiled a 25-13 record during his tenure at Winthrop, winning the Western Maine Class C championship in 1995. In 1996, Kempton was defensive coordinator at Lewiston High School.

Scott Walker, Wide Receivers

Walker returns to the Colby coaching staff for his second season as wide receivers and tight ends coach. Before joining the Colby staff, Walker spent two years as head coach and one year as an assistant at Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores, MI. A native of Fairfield, ME, Walker was a multi-sport standout at Lawrence High School who went on to play outside linebacker at Dartmouth College before initially joining the coaching ranks as an assistant at Hanover High School in New Hampshire.

Chap Nelson Chap Nelson, Equipment Manager

One of the more familiar faces on campus is Chap Nelson ('82), who has served as Colby's equipment manager since 1985. In that role, the Clinton, ME, native and Lawrence High School graduate oversees the procurement and maitainence of equipment and uniforms for all of the school's varsity teams, as well as the myriad of club and intramural sports offered by the college.

Nelson graduated from Colby with a degree in administrative sciences, then attended The Ohio State University where he earned a master's degree in athletic administration in 1984. Nelson returned to Colby in 1985 as the equipment manager. He is assisted in the equipment room by Mary Lou Caron, now in her sixth year with the athletic department.
