PORTLAND, Maine -- The Colby College golf team travelled to Portland Friday morning, and returned as the Maine Intercollegiate Golf Champions. The White Mules beat 13 other teams with a team score of 321, placing them a full nine strokes ahead of second-place UMaine-Farmington.
Colby was led by the remarkable play of sophomore Scott Bixby (La Jolla, Calif.) and first-year Matt Simard (Auburn,Me.), who each tied for second place overall with rounds of 77, one shot behind the individual medalist, Bates' Nick Brunero. The other scorers for Colby were first-year Ben Powell (Damriscotta, Me.), who shot an 82, and senior Captain Ben O'Connell (Brookfield, Mass.), who finished with a round of 85.
The victory continued the stream of steady improvment for the golf team this season. The White Mules finished third in the nine-team Terrier Invitational last week, and earlier this week placed second at the 12-team Bowdoin Invitational. The driving force behind Colby's recent surge has been the play of its younger players, particularly Powell, who led the team in its first two tournaments with an average round of 77.
The White Mules will seek victory once again on Tuesday, September 29, when they host the Sid Farr Invitational in Waterville, Maine.
