GAME RECAP
Colby vs Trinity
January 12, 2002
Waterville, ME
Colby Stays Hot. Tops Trinity 4-0
Waterville, Maine- The Colby College White Mules (9-1-0) continued their
impressive play with a shutout of the Trinity College Bantams (2-8-0) 4-0.
Sarah Webster '05 (Yarmouth, Maine) was in net for Colby and recorded the
victory, stopping 13 of 13 shots. To start the first period both teams took
turns mounting offensive attacks in the opposition's end, but neither team
seemed able to get any offensive flow going early on. Tough defense was
the theme of the first half of the first period. Colby's best scoring
opportunity in the early going came when Lauren Gremelspacher '03 (Granby,
Ct.) took a cross-ice feed and had on opening as she blasted a slap-shot,
but Mimi MacKinnon '04 (Glen Cove, N.Y.) was up to the task, turning away
the shot. In the next few minutes Colby would sustain a consistent
offensive attack, bombarding MacKinnon with shot after shot, but the
Trinity goaltender continually turned the puck away. Trinity would make
their first mistake when a Trinity player was called for hooking to put
Colby on the power-play, and Colby would capitalize seven seconds later
when Michele Barmash '05 (Kirkland, Que.) shot the puck into the net,
giving Colby a 1-0 lead. The 1-0 margin would hold up for the remainder of
the period as Colby went into first intermission with a 1-0 lead.
The second period started out similarly to the end of the first,
with Colby able to keep the puck in their offensive zone, but the Trinity
defense and MacKinnon were able to keep the lead to 1-0. Michelle O'Neil
'05 (Westwood, Masss.) intercepted a Colby pass and on the breakaway took a
blazing slapshot that beat Colby goaltender Sarah Webster low and to the
right, but fortunately for Colby the shot hit the post and Colby's 1-0 lead
was intact. Once again, Colby would take advantage of a power-play
opportunity when Katie Bowman was called for hooking with three minutes to
go in the period. Twenty-four seconds later Heather DeVito '05 (Arlington,
Mass.) scooped up a rebound of Caitlin Krause's '05 (Keene, N.H.) shot,
and while getting knocked down put in the shot for a 2-0 lead. Colby would
take their 2-0 lead into the locker room for second intermission.
Midway through the third period Colby went on the power-play, and
had an excellent chance for a scoring opportunity when they wokred it
around the point and got the puck into Carrie Swiderski '02 (Watertown,
Conn.), but MacMillan, sprawled out, made the save to keep the score at
2-0. A few minutes later Swiderski would fire and hit though, as she took
a rebound a put it past the Bantam goaltender for a 3-0 Colby lead. Colby
would soon add to their lead when Gremelspacher took the puck from the
corner, weaved to the front of the net, and shot it past the sprawled out
goaltender for a 4-0 Colby lead and final score.
