Colby and USM Skate to a 1-1 Tie

Waterville, Maine- The Colby College White Mules (9-1-1) drew even against the University of Southern Maine (9-3-3) at Alfond Arena 1-1.The game featured many scoring chances, as well as penalties, but neither team could break the tie.

The first ten minutes of the first period both teams played back safe on defense, not allowing for much offensive crispness for either side. Then with 7:47 left in the period, Carrie Swiderski ¹02 (Watertown, Conn.) scored a power play goal. Both Jennifer Anderson ¹05 (Rochester, Minn.) and Kelley Jessopp ¹02 (Mettawa, Ill.) set up Swiderski for the goal. That would be all the scoring for the first period, however both teams were able to create several opportunities.

Both teams came out rather aggressive in the second period, which resulted in some penalties throughout the period. Then, Holly Manning ¹03 (Northfield, Vt.) intercepted a pass at her own blue line, skated passed the last Colby defender and made a pretty move to get it by the sprawled out goaltender to tie the game. Neither team could take advantage of the power play chances that they encountered during the rest of the period, as the scored remained 1-1.

The third period started with some great chances for both the Huskies and the Mules. Lynn Hasday ¹05 (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) for Colby and Karen Jamnik ¹02 (Cranston, RI) for USM each made some excellent saves to keep their respective teams in the game. The teams skated to an even 1-1 at the end of the third and had to play a five-minute overtime.

Not even the extra five minute session could decide a winner in this game, as the teams could not find the back of the net. The intensity of the game picked up immensely, as both teams came close on several occasions. Colby¹s record now becomes 9-1-1 and the University of Southern Maine goes to 9-3-4.
