Colby Cruises To 5-0 Shutout Victory Over Amherst In Women's Hockey

Waterville, Maine- The Colby College White Mules (11-1-1) continued their excellent play today at Alfond Ice Arena with a convincing 5-0 victory over the Amherst College Lord Jeffs (4-12-0). Colby received goals from four different players and Sarah Webster '05 and Lynn Hasday '05 combined in net for the shutout.

For most of the first period in the Colby women's hockey game versus Amherst was a defensive battle. However, Colby dominated play keeping the puck in the Amherst zone for much of this time. Colby had some great shots from forwards Kelley Jessopp '02 and Lauren Gremelspacher '03 but perhaps there best chance to score came on a two on one Colby breakaway shot from Heather DeVito '05 4:48 into the period. Colby took the lead 17:30 into the first period when forward Jill Young '03 made a centering pass to forward Christina Dotchin '04 for the Colby goal. Colby's offense dominated the first period with 17 shots on goal, however, Heidi Alexander made 16 saves in the period to limit Colby to the lone score.

The beginning of the second period yielded similar results for Colby. The Mules had multiple clear shots on net but could not get the red light flashing. Amherst threatened when an Amherst forward got a breakaway just to be stonewalled by Colby goalie Sarah Webster who made a brilliant diving stick save to squander the Amherst scoring opportunity. Colby scored their second goal of the contest 10:26 into the period when Christina Dotchin '04 found a wide open Carrie Swiderski '02 in front of the net who scored on wrist shot into the upper left corner of the goal.

Colby increased their lead early in the third period when Caitlin Krause '05 found an open Jill Young '03 at the blue line, Young took a powerful slap shot that went off the post into the net for Colbyıs third goal 2:26 into the period. Colby scored again 6:17 into the period on a wrist shot by Christina Dotchin '04 for her second goal of the game expanding Colbyıs lead to 4-0. Colby continued their dominance adding to their lead 14:04 into the period when Kate Sweeney '04 took a pass from Caitlin Krause '05 for Colbyıs fifth goal of the contest. Colby preceeded to out skate Amherst for the last few minutes of regulation to ensure a 5-0 shutout victory. Colby improves to 11-1-1 on the season.
