Southern Maine Knocks off Colby College, 2-1
GORHAM, Maine: Sophomore goalie Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.)
turned aside 31 shots, including 15 in the third period, as the
University of Southern Maine Huskies upset the visiting Colby College
White Mules, 2-1, in a non-conference game Tuesday night at the USM Ice
Arena.
Junior forward Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.) scored the
game-winning goal off a soft pass from senior forward Karen Harrison
(Lakewood, Calif.) at 14:46 of the second period, while the Huskies were
shorthanded.
Southern Maine had taken a 1-0 lead at 8:17 of the middle frame,
when freshman forward Molly Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.) pounced on a
loose puck in the crease and whistled a shot into the net. However,
Colby answered at 10:36, when senior forward Carrie Swiderski
(Watertown, Conn.) scored on a four-on-four situation.
Colby held a decided edge in play in the third period,
outshooting Southern Maine by a 15-2 margin, but was unable to net the
equalizer. Overall, Colby outshot Maine by a 31-14 count. Freshman
goalie Lynn Hasday (Rockville Center, N.Y.) had 14 saves for Colby.
Southern Maine, which improved to 12-3-4, will return to action
on Friday evening, when it hosts Sacred Heart. Colby, which fell to
11-2-1, will be idle until February 9, when it hosts Concordia.
