Colby Battles Top Ranked Bowdoin to 2-2 Standoff
Waterville, Maine- The Colby College White Mules (12-5-2) jumped out to an
early 1-0 lead and held a 2-1 lead in the third period, but a Bowdoin
College Polar Bears (19-3-1) goal with 7:46 left in the third sent the
contest into overtime where it ended in a tie. Lynn Hasday '05 (Rockville
Center, NY) saved 35 of 37 shots for the tie while Emily McKissock saved 18
of 20 shots for Bowdoin.
Bowdoin broke into the scoring column first when Kirsti Anderson set up in
front of the net and off a nice feed beat Hasday with a wrist shot five
hole for a 1-0 Bowdoin lead. Bowdoin looked to add to their lead minutes
later when they had a sprawled out Hasday beat, but she made an impressive
kick save to preserve the Colby lead. Carrie Swiderksi '02 (Watertown,
Ct.) created some scoring opportunities for Colby at the end of the period,
but the contest stood at 1-0 heading into intermission.
Colby tied up the contest 6:07 into the second period when they barraged
McKissock with an array of shots and Michele Barmash '05 (Kirkland, Quebec)
was in place for the rebound and a 1-1 score. The Mules stretched their
lead in the third period when Caitlin Krause '05 (Keene, N.H.) one-timed a
pass from Heather Devito '05 (Arlington, Mass.) for a 2-1 Colby lead.
Colby was able to play strong defense, but Bowdoin scored on a tough goal,
as the puck trickled past the line behind a helpless Hasday for a Jess
Burke goal and 2-2 score. Some big saves by Hasday with two minutes to go
sent the contest into overtime, where both defenses kept either team from
getting a good look at the net.
