Colby Women¹s Hockey Suffers First Loss Of Season To Middlebury 3-1

Waterville, Maine The Colby College White Mules (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season today to the Middlebury College Panthers (7-0) 3-1 at Alfond Ice Arena. Early on, the game had the makings of an upset as the fiesty Mules were within a goal of the Panthers into the second period, but the Panther defense was stingy all day long, limiting Colby¹s scoring opportunities to 13 shots on goal. Winning goaltender Kati Madouras ¹04 (White Plains, N.Y.) turned back 12 of 13 shots for the Panthers, while Lynn Hasday ¹05 (Rockville Center, N.Y.) suffered the first loss of her impressive first-year campaign despite turning away 20 of 23 shots.

Middlebury capitalized on their first power play opportunity of the game when Kate Sweeney ¹04 (Milton, Mass.) was sent to the penalty box for tripping at 14:49 of the first period. The Panthers would score sixteen seconds later when Angela Kapus ¹03 (Milwaukee, Ore.) fired a rebound past the Colby goaltender for the first goal of the night. Colby would not take long to answer though, as freshman star Heather DeVito ¹05 (Arlington, Mass.) continued with her hot hand when she blasted a shot past the Middlebury goalie to tie the score at 1-1 one minute and thirty four seconds later. Middlebury would strike next when Amber Neil ¹03 (Port Crane, N.Y.) broke away from two Colby defenders and beat Hasday low and to the right for a 2-1 Middlebury lead.

The score would remain at 2-1 until the second period when Kapus would use a little bit of trickery for her second goal of the night. Standing behind the net she initially looked as if she was going to pass the puck to one of her Panther teammates in front of the net. She quickly broke to the left side of the net though, and reached her stick around the side of the net to stuff it in the corner for a 3-1 Middlebury lead. Colby was unable to mount a consistent offensive attack for the remainder of the game against Middlebury¹s defense, thus suffering their first loss of the season. Colby next plays Connecticut College at home at 7PM on January 5th.
