White Mules Keep Rolling, Pick Up Third Straight Victory With 7-2 Win Over Trinity
Colby vs Trinity College
April 6, 2002
Waterville, Maine
Waterville, Maine- The Colby College White Mules (5-1) earned their third straight NESCAC victory today at Seaverns Field over the Trinity College Bantams (1-6) 7-2. The Mules continue their NESCAC schedule tomorrow versus the Williams College Ephs at Noon at Seaverns Field.
The Mules opened the scoring when Ryan Kane '02 (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) spun away from a Bantam defender and then found a wide-open Mike Haimes '04 (Old Greenwich, Conn.), who shot it past the goaltender for a 1-0 Colby lead. Colby established a physical presence minutes later when Sean Murphy '05 (Manchester, Vt.) leveled a Trinity attackman in front of the Colby net. The Mules added to their lead when from behind the net Blake Grosch '02 (Warren, N.J.) found a slicing Bill Spencer '02 (Sudbury, Mass.), who batted the pass out of midair for a 2-0 score.
The Bantams offense began to establish some tempo in the second quarter, keeping the ball in their offensive zone for the majority of the start of the period. They scored their first goal when Will Peace '04 (Chestertown, Md.) took a pass from John Thach '05 (Berwyn, Pa.) and was finally able to put the ball past John Shea '02 (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), who had made many outstanding saves up to that point. The Mules would answer Trinity's score soon after when Ben Winston '03 (Golden, Colo.) found daylight and barreled down the middle of the field untouched before he shot it into the net for a 3-1 score.
The Mules would add to their lead early in the third quarter when they got goals from Eric Siedel '05 (Durham, N.H.) and Haimes in a 1 minute 23 second span. That would be it for scoring, as the offensive philosophy of the Mules seemed to be to pull it out and be patient, manipulating ball possession and clock management.
To start the fourth quarter the crowd would be ignited once again when Sean Murphy laid out another Bantam player, but was called for a personal foul. The Bantams would score soon after when Thach notched his second point of the day with a goal that put the score at 5-2. The Bantam offense now began to show a sense of urgency, creating clear shots for scoring opportunities, but Shea was up to the challenge and turned their attempts away. Colby would add a much needed insurance goal minutes later when Chris Larson '02 (Darien, Conn.) shot one past the Trinity netminder, assisted by Siedel. The Mules would put the game away when Barron Butler '03 (Marblehead, Mass.) intercepted a Bantam pass and caught the goaltender out of position for an open net goal.
