Colby College Bolts to Early Lead, Drops Southern Maine, 16-5

GORHAM, Maine - Senior Bill Spencer (Sudbury, Mass.) netted four goals and added a pair of assists, and sophomore Mike Haimes (Greenwich, Conn.) contributed three goals and an assist to lead the visiting Colby College White Mules to a 16-5 triumph over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Thursday afternoon at Paula D. Hodgdon Field. With the win, Colby improves to 7-3, while Southern Maine slips to 5-6.
Colby, which built a 4-0 lead through one quarter of play, took a 9-1 advantage into the intermission. Southern Maine slowed down the Colby attack following the break, but the Mules still registered a 7-4 second half scoring advantage to account for the 16-5 final. Junior Barron Butler (Marblehead, Mass.) and sophomore Eric Seidel (Durham, N.H.) each scored a pair of goals for Colby, while senior Jed McGraw (Wellesley, Mass.), junior Conor Cooper (Reading, Mass.), sophomore Ryan Tyler (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and freshman Matthew Roland (Somers, Conn.) contributed one goal apiece.
The Huskies received two goals from sophomore Jon McCabe (Farmington, Maine) and one each from sophomore Nick Rich (Yarmouth, Maine) and freshmen Matt Butler (Barnstable, Mass.), and Kurt Gagnon (Hollis, Maine). Freshman goalie Frank Leclair (York, Maine) made 14 saves for Southern Maine, which returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Keene State. Colby, which received 8 saves from sophomore Matt LaPaglia (Upper Montclair, NJ) will host Connecticut College on Saturday.
