Waterville, Maine

Waterville, Maine- The Colby College White Mules (8-3) topped the Connecticut College Camels (3-8) 9-7 at Seaverns Field. The victory is the second in a row for the Mules, and with two NESCAC contests remaining, leaves the Mules in good position for a home game in the NESCAC playoffs. Bill Spencer '02 (Sudbury, Mass.) led the way for the Mules with two goals and two assists, while Barron Butler '03 (Marblehead, Mass.) had two goals and an assist in the winning effort. Leading the way for Conn. College was Dan Hawxhurst '03 (Huntington Station, N.Y.) who had three goals and Shane Kaiser '04 (New Canaan, Conn.) who had two goals. In net for the Mules in the victory until the last five minutes was John Shea '02 (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) who made five saves, and for Conn. College it was Tyler Volpe '02 (Andover, Mass.), who made 11 saves.

The first quarter was low scoring, with each team picking up one goal, Hawxhurst scoring first for the Camels and Butler for Colby when he wrapped around a shot from the back of the net for a score. Colby would outscore the Camels 3-1 in the second quarter, with Spencer and Hawxhurst trading goals to start the quarter, and then Matt Roland '05 (Somers, Conn.) and Blake Grosch '02 (Warren, N.J.) scoring to give the Mules a 4-2 halftime lead. Josh Cleaver '04 (Kennett Square, Pa.) stretched the Colby lead to 6-2 to start the third quarter when he scored similar goals, taking a shot right off a faceoff for both goals. The Camels scored on an unassisted goal from Mike Hasenauer '03 (Weston, Conn.) and then Kaieser scored his first goal to put the score at 6-4. Butler scored his second goal of the game at 7:21 of the third to extend the lead 7-4 heading into the final quarter. Bill Spencer scored the game-winning goal at 11:29 in the fourth, coming through for the Mules as he has all season, taking a pass from behind the net for a score. Kaiser and Hawxhurst scored late goals for the Camels, but the Mules held on for the 9-7 final.
